Ford Explorer: Front Drive Axle/Differential / General Procedures - Differential Draining and Filling

Materials

Draining

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
   Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview (100-02 Jacking and Lifting, Description and Operation).
   

1. 
   Remove the engine undershield.
   
   1. Remove the pin-type retainer.
      
   2. Remove the bolts and the radiator air deflector.
      
   3. Remove the bolts.
      
   4. Remove the retainers and the engine undershield.
      

1. Remove the front differential fill plug.
   

1.   WARNING: Be prepared to collect escaping fluids.

   Remove the front differential drain plug.
   

Filling

1. Install the front differential drain plug.
   Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

1. Fill the front differential with clean gear lubricant.
   Refer to: Specifications (205-03 Front Drive Axle/Differential, Specifications).
   Material: Motorcraft® SAE 75W-140 Synthetic Rear Axle Lubricant / XY-75W140-QL (WSL-M2C192-A)

1. Ensure the front differential gear lubricant is filled to the bottom of the filler plug hole.
   

1. Install the front differential fill plug.
   Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

1. 
   Install the engine undershield
   
   1. Position the engine undershield and install the pin-type retainer.
      
   2. Install the bolts.
      
   3. Install the radiator air deflector and the bolts.
      
   4. Install the radiator air deflector retainers.
