Kia Picanto: ENGINE START/STOP button : (if equipped) / Starting the engine. Stopping the Engine

Kia Picanto 2024-2026 Owner's Manual / Driving your vehicle / ENGINE START/STOP button : (if equipped) / Starting the engine. Stopping the Engine

Starting the engine

WARNING

  • Always wear suitable footwear when operating your Kia Picanto. High heels, ski boots and other unsuitable shoes can interfere with accurate operation of the brake and accelerator pedals.

  • Do not depress the accelerator pedal when starting the engine. The vehicle could move unexpectedly and cause an accident.

  • Wait until the engine speed has returned to its normal level before releasing the brake pedal. Releasing the brake while engine rpm is high may cause the vehicle to move suddenly.

NOTE

Kick down mechanism (if equipped)

If the accelerator pedal is equipped with a kick down mechanism, increased pedal resistance helps prevent unintentional full-throttle operation. Pressing the pedal beyond approximately 80% of its travel can allow full throttle, after which the pedal becomes easier to depress. This change in resistance is a normal operating characteristic and does not indicate a fault.

Starting the petrol engine

  1. Keep the smart key with you inside the vehicle, or make sure it is located within the passenger compartment.

  2. Check that the parking brake is firmly applied before attempting to start the engine.

  3. Manual Transmission: Fully depress the clutch pedal and move the gear lever into Neutral. Keep both the clutch and brake pedals depressed throughout the starting procedure.

Automated Manual Transmission: Select N (Neutral) and fully depress the brake pedal. The engine cannot be started unless the shift lever is in N (Neutral).

Automatic Transmission: Place the shift lever in P (Park) and fully depress the brake pedal.

On vehicles with an automatic transmission, the engine can also be started with the shift lever in N (Neutral).

  4. Press the ENGINE START/STOP button to start the engine.

Start the engine without depressing the accelerator pedal. Keep your foot off the accelerator during starting.

  1. Do not leave the vehicle stationary while waiting for the engine to warm up.

Begin driving at moderate engine speeds, allowing the engine to warm up during normal driving. Avoid abrupt acceleration and deceleration during this period.

Manual transmission

  • When preparing to move off, keep the clutch and brake pedals depressed. Check that engine rpm is within the appropriate range, then select the required gear.

  • Release the parking brake, then gradually release the clutch pedal while applying the accelerator smoothly. Coordinate the pedals to move the vehicle away slowly and under control.

    CAUTION

Do not turn an ignition switch to START while the engine is already running. Engaging the starter against a running engine may damage the starter.

  • The engine may not start if the smart key is too far away from the driver, even when the key is somewhere inside the vehicle.

  • When the ENGINE START/STOP button is in ACC or a higher operating mode, opening any door prompts the system to check for the smart key. If the key is not detected inside the vehicle, the Smart key detection warning indicator indicator flashes or the message “Key is not in vehicle” appears on the LCD display. Closing all doors while the key is absent also triggers a warning chime for 5 seconds. The indicator or message turns off while the vehicle is moving. Always keep the smart key with you when using your Kia Picanto.

WARNING

The engine can be started only when the smart key is inside the vehicle. Never allow children or anyone unfamiliar with the vehicle to operate the ENGINE START/STOP button or related controls.

CAUTION

If the engine stalls while the vehicle is moving, do not attempt to select P (Park) on a transmission equipped with that position. If traffic and road conditions permit, select N (Neutral) while the vehicle is still moving and press the ENGINE START/STOP button to attempt to restart the engine.

Starting the Kia Picanto by pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button with the smart key

NOTE

  • If the smart key battery is weak or the key is not functioning correctly, you can start the engine by using the smart key itself to press the ENGINE START/STOP button, as illustrated.

  • A blown brake switch fuse prevents the normal starting procedure from working. Replace the fuse with a new one. If replacement is not possible, the engine can be started by holding the ENGINE START/STOP button for 10 seconds while the power mode is in ACC. Although this procedure allows starting without depressing the brake pedal, always hold the brake pedal down before starting for your safety.

CAUTION

Do not hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for more than 10 seconds, except when carrying out the starting procedure for a blown stop lamp fuse.

Stopping the Engine

Manual Transmission

  1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop and depress the clutch and brake pedals together.

  2. Keep both pedals depressed and move the gear lever into N (Neutral).

  3. Continue holding the brake pedal down while applying the parking brake.

  4. Press the ENGINE START/STOP button to switch off the engine.

Automated Manual Transmission

  1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop and keep the brake pedal firmly depressed.

  2. Continue holding the brake pedal down and move the shift lever into N (Neutral).

  3. With the brake pedal still depressed, apply the parking brake to secure the vehicle.

  4. Press the ENGINE START/STOP button to switch off the engine of your Kia Picanto.

Automatic Transmission

  1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop and keep the brake pedal firmly depressed.

  2. With the brake pedal held down, move the shift lever into N (Neutral).

  3. Continue holding the brake pedal down while fully applying the parking brake.

  4. Press the ENGINE START/STOP button to stop the engine. Before leaving the vehicle parked, make sure the automatic transmission is in P (Park), as specified below.

CAUTION

  • Avoid running the engine at high speed while the vehicle is stationary immediately before switching it off.

  • When parking on a slope, select the position appropriate to the transmission. For a manual transmission, use 1st gear when facing uphill and R (Reverse) when facing downhill. For an automated manual transmission, the specified uphill position is N (Neutral). An automatic transmission must be placed in P (Park) when parked. Place chocks under the tyres to help prevent movement.

  • Always confirm that an automatic transmission is in P (Park) before leaving the vehicle. If it is left in another position, an external impact could cause the vehicle to move.

WARNING

Do not park the vehicle on a steep hill. The vehicle may move, creating a risk to people and property nearby.
