Opening a front door illuminates the ENGINE START/STOP button, making it easier to locate when entering your Kia Picanto. The illumination switches off approximately 30 seconds after the door is closed. It also switches off immediately when the theft-alarm system is armed.
OFF
With Manual Transmission/Automated Manual Transmission
Bring the vehicle to a complete stop, then press the ENGINE START/STOP button to switch off the engine from START/RUN or switch off vehicle power from ON.
With Automatic Transmission
To switch off the engine from START/RUN or turn off vehicle power from ON, place the shift lever in P (Park) and press the ENGINE START/STOP button. If the lever is not in P (Park), pressing the button changes the power mode to ACC rather than OFF.
On vehicles fitted with an anti-theft steering lock, the steering wheel locks when a door is opened with the ENGINE START/STOP button in OFF. This provides additional protection against theft.
Vehicles equipped with anti-theft steering column lock (if equipped)
The anti-theft steering column lock secures the steering wheel when the ENGINE START/STOP button is in OFF and a door is opened.
If the steering wheel does not lock correctly when you open the driver’s door, a warning chime sounds. If the condition persists, have the system inspected by a professional workshop. Kia recommends visiting an authorised Kia dealer/service partner.
If the driver’s door is already open when you change the ENGINE START/STOP button to OFF, the steering wheel will not lock and the warning chime will sound. Close the door to allow the steering wheel to lock and the chime to stop.
NOTE
If the steering wheel does not unlock properly, the ENGINE START/STOP button will not operate. Gently move the steering wheel to the right and left while pressing the button to release tension on the steering lock.
If you have difficulty selecting ACC, press the ENGINE START/STOP button while gently turning the steering wheel in both directions to relieve the tension.
Make sure the vehicle is completely stationary before switching off the engine during normal operation.
CAUTION
During normal operation, switch off the engine from START/RUN or vehicle power from ON only after the vehicle has stopped. In an emergency while the vehicle is moving, you can stop the engine and select ACC by holding the ENGINE START/STOP button for more than 2 seconds, or by pressing it 3 times in succession within 3 seconds. If the vehicle is still moving, the engine can be restarted without depressing the brake pedal: select N (Neutral) and press the ENGINE START/STOP button.
ACC (Accessory)
With Manual Transmission
With the power mode in OFF, press the ENGINE START/STOP button without depressing the clutch pedal to select ACC.
With Automated Manual Transmission
With the power mode in OFF, press the ENGINE START/STOP button without depressing the brake pedal to select ACC.
With Automatic Transmission
With the power mode in OFF, press the ENGINE START/STOP button without depressing the brake pedal to select ACC.
In ACC, the steering wheel unlocks and electrical accessories become available for use.
If the Kia Picanto remains in ACC for more than 1 hour, the power mode automatically switches off to help prevent battery discharge.
ON
With Manual Transmission
With the power mode in ACC, press the ENGINE START/STOP button without depressing the clutch pedal. The system changes to ON.
With Automated Manual Transmission
With the power mode in ACC, press the ENGINE START/STOP button without depressing the brake pedal to select ON.
With Automatic Transmission
With the power mode in ACC, press the ENGINE START/STOP button without depressing the brake pedal to select ON.
The ON position allows you to check the warning lights before starting the engine. Avoid leaving the vehicle in this mode for an extended period with the engine stopped, as the electrical systems draw power from the battery and may discharge it.
START/RUN
With Manual Transmission
To start the engine, place the gear lever in N (Neutral), depress both the clutch and brake pedals, then press the ENGINE START/STOP button.
With Automated Manual Transmission
Place the shift lever in N (Neutral), depress the brake pedal and press the ENGINE START/STOP button to start the engine.
With Automatic Transmission
To start the engine, select P (Park) or N (Neutral), depress the brake pedal and press the ENGINE START/STOP button. For safety, use P (Park) when starting your Kia Picanto.
NOTE
The engine will not start if you press the ENGINE START/STOP button without depressing the clutch pedal on a manual transmission vehicle, or without depressing the brake pedal on an automatic or automated manual transmission vehicle. Instead, repeated presses change the power mode in the following sequence:
OFF → ACC → ON → OFF or ACC
NOTE
Leaving the Kia Picanto ENGINE START/STOP button in ACC or ON for an extended period with the engine stopped can discharge the battery.
WARNING
Never press the ENGINE START/STOP button while the vehicle is moving, except when following the emergency shutdown procedure described above. Switching off the engine while driving can result in a loss of directional control and braking function, potentially causing an accident.
The anti-theft steering column lock does not replace the parking brake. Before leaving the driver’s seat on a vehicle with an automatic transmission, make sure the shift lever is in P (Park), fully apply the parking brake and switch off the engine. Failure to take these precautions may allow the vehicle to move suddenly and unexpectedly.
Never reach through the steering wheel to press the ENGINE START/STOP button or operate another control while the vehicle is moving. Your hand or arm could interfere with steering, causing a loss of control, an accident, serious injury or death.
Keep loose or movable objects away from the driver’s seat. They may shift during driving, interfere with the driver’s actions and cause an accident.
