Never move the shift lever out of P (Park) or N (Neutral) into another position while pressing the accelerator pedal. Release the accelerator before selecting a different transmission range.
Never select P (Park) while your Kia Picanto is moving. Wait until the vehicle has stopped completely before moving the shift lever into the parking position.
Bring the vehicle to a complete stop before selecting R (Reverse) or D (Drive). Always check that all movement has stopped before changing between forward and reverse travel.
Never disengage the transmission and allow the vehicle to coast downhill in neutral. This is extremely hazardous. Keep the transmission in gear whenever the vehicle is moving, including throughout a descent.
Do not “ride” the brakes by keeping continuous pressure on the brake pedal. Prolonged braking can cause overheating and impair brake operation. On a long downhill stretch, reduce your speed and select a lower gear so that engine braking helps slow the vehicle and reduces reliance on the brakes.
Reduce vehicle speed before selecting a lower gear. If you attempt to downshift without slowing sufficiently, the transmission may not engage the requested gear.
Always apply the parking brake when parking your Kia Picanto. Selecting P (Park) alone is not a substitute for the parking brake and should not be your only means of preventing the vehicle from moving.
Drive with particular care on slippery surfaces, using smooth, controlled inputs when braking, accelerating or changing gears. A sudden change in speed can cause the drive wheels to lose their grip on the road, potentially resulting in a loss of vehicle control.
Press and release the accelerator pedal progressively. Smooth accelerator inputs help deliver the best balance of vehicle performance and fuel economy while making changes in speed more controlled.
WARNING
When travelling uphill or downhill, select D (Drive) for forward movement or R (Reverse) for backward movement. Before setting off, confirm the selected gear on the instrument cluster. Allowing the vehicle to move in the opposite direction to the selected gear can cause the engine to stop and affect braking performance, creating a dangerous situation.
Always fasten your seat belt and ensure that every occupant is properly restrained. In a collision, a person who is not wearing a seat belt is significantly more likely to suffer serious or fatal injuries than someone who is correctly belted.
Avoid taking corners or making turns at high speed. Reduce your speed before entering the turn so that you can maintain controlled vehicle movement.
Avoid sudden steering inputs, including abrupt lane changes and fast, sharp turns. Move the steering wheel smoothly rather than making rapid changes in direction.
Losing control at highway speeds greatly increases the risk of a rollover. Maintaining control of both speed and direction is particularly important when travelling at these speeds.
A loss of control can occur when two or more wheels leave the road and the driver overcorrects while attempting to return. An excessive steering movement can make this situation more dangerous.
If your vehicle leaves the roadway, resist the urge to steer sharply back onto it. Reduce speed first, then guide the vehicle back into the traffic lanes with a controlled steering movement.
Never exceed the posted speed limit. Keep your speed within the applicable limit throughout the journey.
WARNING
If your Kia Picanto becomes stuck in snow, mud, sand or similar material, you may attempt to free it by rocking it forwards and backwards. Do not attempt this manoeuvre when any person or object is near the vehicle. As the tyres regain traction, the vehicle may suddenly move forwards or backwards without warning. Anyone nearby could be injured, and surrounding objects could be struck or damaged. Make sure the area around the vehicle is clear before attempting to rock it free.
To pull away from a standstill on a steep uphill gradient, hold the vehicle with the brake pedal and move the shift lever to D (Drive). Select a suitable gear for the weight being carried and the steepness of the slope, then release the parking brake while continuing to hold the vehicle with the service brakes. Gradually press the accelerator as you release the service brakes, coordinating both actions to move uphill smoothly.
