The Kia Picanto automatic transmission has 4 forward speeds and one reverse speed. It selects the individual gears automatically according to the position of the shift lever.
NOTE
The first few gear changes in a new vehicle, or after the battery has been disconnected, may feel slightly abrupt. This is normal. After several shifts, the Transmission Control Module (TCM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) adjusts the shifting sequence.
For smooth engagement, keep the brake pedal depressed when moving from N (Neutral) into a forward gear or reverse.
WARNING
Automatic Transmission
Before selecting D (Drive) or R (Reverse), check the area around the vehicle for people. Pay particular attention to children, who may be difficult to see close to the vehicle.
Before leaving the driver’s seat, first select P (Park), then fully apply the parking brake and switch off the engine. Follow these steps in the stated order to help prevent sudden, unexpected vehicle movement.
Do not apply engine braking abruptly by shifting rapidly from a higher gear to a lower gear on slippery roads. The sudden change in braking force may cause the vehicle to skid and result in an accident.
CAUTION
To avoid transmission damage, do not increase engine speed with the brakes applied while the lever is in R (Reverse) or any forward driving position.
When stopped on an incline, hold the vehicle with the foot brake or parking brake. Do not use engine power to keep it stationary on the slope.
Do not move from N (Neutral) or P (Park) into D (Drive) or R (Reverse) while the engine is running above idle speed. Allow engine speed to return to idle before selecting the driving position.
