A: Steep grade! Press brake pedal |
When driving uphill or negotiating steep gradients, use the following practices to avoid placing excessive heat load on the clutch:
Use the foot brake or parking brake to hold the vehicle stationary on an incline.
In stop-and-go traffic on a slope, allow some space to open ahead before moving forwards. When you stop again, hold the vehicle with the foot brake.
Using the accelerator or creeping function to hold the vehicle on a hill without applying the brake can overheat the clutch and transmission, potentially causing damage. A warning message appears on the LCD display when this condition occurs.
If this warning appears on the LCD display, apply the foot brake.
Failing to respond to the warning can result in transmission damage.
Transmission (clutch) High temperature
|
A: Transmission temp. is high! Stop safely. |
Repeated starts in stop-and-go traffic on steep slopes, abrupt take-offs, sudden acceleration and other demanding driving conditions can cause the transmission clutch temperature to rise excessively.
When the clutch becomes too hot, a protective operating mode is activated. The gear position indicator flashes, a chime sounds, and the LCD displays “Transmission temperature is high! Stop safely”. Vehicle response and gear changes may feel less smooth while this protection is active.
If the clutch temperature continues to rise after the initial warning, a second warning follows. The warning sound and flashing shift indicator then continue without interruption.
If this occurs, pull over in a safe location and stop the vehicle. Keep the engine running, apply the brakes, and allow the clutch to cool for a few minutes.
Continuing to drive despite the warning may worsen the vehicle’s response, causing abrupt gear changes or jerking. To restore normal operation, stop safely, apply the foot brake and leave the engine running while the transmission cools for a few minutes.
WARNING
Never hold your Kia Picanto stationary on an uphill road using only the accelerator pedal or creeping function. Doing so can overheat the clutch, cause extensive damage and shorten its service life.
Transmission (clutch) overheated
|
A: Transmission Hot! Park with engine on |
|
A: Transmission cooling. Park for 00 min. |
|
A: Trans cooled. Resume driving. |
If driving continues and the clutch reaches its maximum temperature limit, the display shows “Transmission hot! Park with engine On”.
The warning display indicates how long you need to wait for the transmission to cool.
Pull over to a safe location and bring the vehicle to a complete stop. Keep the engine running, apply the brakes, select N (Neutral) and allow the transmission to cool.
You may resume driving when the display confirms “Transmission cooled down. Resume driving”.
Drive smoothly whenever conditions allow to reduce unnecessary clutch heating. If any of these LCD warning messages continue to flash, have the system inspected by a professional workshop for your safety. Kia recommends visiting an authorised Kia dealer/service partner.
