The Kia Picanto Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) is a manual transmission with automatic gear selection and clutch operation. Its driving characteristics retain the direct feel associated with a manual gearbox, even though the system performs the shifts for you.
With D (Drive) selected, the transmission changes gears automatically, much like a conventional automatic. However, you may sometimes feel the changes or hear the actuators operating the clutch and selecting a gear. These operating sounds are normal and do not indicate a transmission fault.
The AMT uses a single dry-type clutch rather than the torque converter found in a conventional automatic transmission. This design supports improved acceleration performance and fuel efficiency while driving, although the initial response when moving away from a stop may be slightly slower than with a conventional automatic.
Gear changes can consequently feel more noticeable than those of a conventional automatic transmission. A slight vibration may also occur when moving off as transmission speed is matched to engine speed. This is a normal characteristic of AMT operation.
The dry clutch transfers torque more directly, producing a connected driving feel that differs from a torque-converter automatic. You may notice this most clearly when pulling away from a standstill or travelling slowly in stop-and-go traffic.
During rapid acceleration at low road speeds, engine rpm may rise substantially, depending on the vehicle’s current driving conditions.
For a smooth uphill start, apply the accelerator progressively, adjusting pedal pressure to suit the slope and current conditions.
Releasing the accelerator at low speed may produce noticeable engine braking, similar to the response of a manual transmission.
Clicking sounds may be heard when starting or stopping the engine as the transmission system carries out its self-test. These sounds are normal for the Automated Manual Transmission.
During the first 1,500 km (1,000 miles), low-speed acceleration may occasionally feel less smooth. Throughout this running-in period, the shift quality and operating performance of your new Kia Picanto continue to be optimised.
NOTE
Creeping function
The creeping function helps the vehicle move away smoothly at low speed without accelerator input when a driving gear is engaged. Releasing the brake in D (Drive) or R (Reverse) allows this slow movement; N (Neutral) does not engage a driving gear. Depress the brake pedal or raise the parking brake lever to stop creeping. The function does not operate under the following condition:
The parking brake is applied. Keep the vehicle secured with the brake as appropriate whenever the lever is in R (Reverse), D (Drive) or N (Neutral).

A child safety lock is on the rear edge of each rear door. You must set the child safety lock separately on each door.
