Curtain air bag

The actual air bags installed in the vehicle may differ from the illustrations. The drawings provide a reference for identifying the curtain air bag arrangement.

Curtain air bags are housed along the roof rails on both sides of the vehicle, above the front and rear doors.

During certain side-impact collisions, they are designed to help protect the heads of front-seat occupants and passengers in the rear outboard seats. Their position along the sides of the cabin allows them to provide this additional protection when deployed.

Curtain air bag deployment depends on the severity of the side impact. These air bags are not designed to inflate in every side collision, in impacts to the front or rear of the vehicle, or in most rollover situations. Their operation therefore depends on the particular collision conditions rather than on visible vehicle damage alone.

NOTE

Refer to the WARNING, CAUTION and NOTE information in the Air bag Precautions section. Follow those precautions when using seats adjacent to curtain air bags and when arranging objects inside the vehicle.

The components fitted to your Kia Picanto depend on the selected options and the region in which the vehicle is supplied. Some features shown in the illustrations may therefore not be installed in your vehicle.

  2. Front impact sensor.

  3. Side pressure sensor.

  4. Side impact sensor.

WARNING

  • Do not strike, or allow objects to strike, any location where an air bag or air bag sensor is installed. Protect these areas from impacts during vehicle use and any work around the vehicle.

An impact in one of these locations can cause an air bag to deploy unexpectedly, potentially resulting in serious injury or death.

  • Any change to a sensor’s mounting position or installation angle can affect deployment. An air bag may inflate when it should remain inactive, or fail to inflate when protection is needed, creating a risk of serious or fatal injury.

Do not attempt maintenance on or around the air bag sensors yourself. Have the system serviced by a professional workshop. Kia recommends visiting an authorised Kia dealer/service partner.

  • Deformation of the front bumper, vehicle body or B-pillar where side collision sensors are installed can change sensor angles and cause problems with system operation. If these areas are damaged or distorted, have the system serviced by a professional workshop. Kia recommends an authorised Kia dealer/service partner.

  • The vehicle is designed to absorb collision forces and deploy its air bags under certain impact conditions. Parts fitted to the vehicle must preserve this intended collision response.

When installing bumper guards or replacing a bumper, use only Kia Genuine Parts or parts of an equivalent standard. Unsuitable parts can adversely affect the vehicle’s collision performance and the operation of the air bag deployment system.

  • If equipped with a rollover sensor

Before towing a vehicle equipped with side and curtain air bags, set the vehicle to OFF or ACC and wait 3 minutes. Observe this waiting period before towing begins.

The side and curtain air bags may deploy while the vehicle is ON, or within 3 minutes after it is switched OFF, if the rollover sensor interprets the vehicle’s position or movement as a rollover.
