Kia Picanto: Driving your vehicle / Before driving

Kia Picanto 2024-2026 Owner's Manual / Driving your vehicle / Before driving

Before entering vehicle

  • Check that all windows, outside mirrors and exterior lights are clean, allowing clear visibility and effective lighting.

  • Inspect the tyres and check their condition before setting off.

  • Look underneath the vehicle for any signs of fluid leaks.

  • If you intend to reverse, check the area behind the vehicle and make sure there are no obstacles in your path.

Necessary inspections

Check fluid levels regularly, including engine oil, engine coolant, brake fluid and windscreen washer fluid. The appropriate inspection interval varies according to the fluid. Refer to section 8, “Maintenance”, for the relevant checking procedures and further guidance on maintaining your Kia Picanto.

WARNING

Distracted driving can lead to a loss of vehicle control and an accident resulting in severe injury or death. Your primary responsibility as the driver is to operate the vehicle safely and legally. Never use handheld devices, equipment or vehicle systems in a way that takes your eyes, attention or concentration away from driving. Equipment or functions whose use is prohibited by law must not be used while operating the vehicle.

Before starting

  • Close and lock all doors before preparing to move off.

  • Adjust your seat so that you can comfortably reach and operate every driving control.

  • Set the interior and exterior rearview mirrors to provide a clear view behind and alongside the vehicle.

  • Make sure all lights are functioning correctly.

  • Check the gauges and familiarise yourself with their readings.

  • Check the warning lights when the ignition switch or ENGINE START/STOP button is placed in the ON position.

  • Release the parking brake when ready to move, and confirm that the brake warning light goes out.

Before driving, become familiar with your Kia Picanto and the operation of its equipment. Knowing the controls helps you use them confidently while keeping your attention on the road.

WARNING

Every passenger must wear a correctly fastened seat belt whenever the vehicle is moving. Refer to “Seat belts” for instructions on correct positioning, adjustment and use.

WARNING

Before selecting D (Drive) or R (Reverse), check the area around the vehicle for people. Pay particular attention to children, who may be difficult to see near the vehicle.

WARNING

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Drinking and driving is dangerous and contributes to fatal road accidents. Even a small amount of alcohol affects reflexes, perception and judgement, reducing your ability to respond safely to changing traffic conditions. Driving under the influence of drugs can be just as dangerous as driving after drinking alcohol, or even more dangerous.

The risk of a serious accident increases substantially when you drive after drinking alcohol or taking drugs that impair your ability to drive.

If you have been drinking or taking impairing drugs, do not drive. Do not travel with a driver who has done so. Arrange for a designated driver or call a taxi instead.

WARNING

  • If you stop or park with the engine running, do not hold the accelerator pedal down for an extended period. Doing so can overheat the engine or exhaust system and cause a fire.

  • Secure all loose items inside the vehicle. Sudden braking or a rapid steering movement can cause objects to fall into the driver’s footwell, where they may obstruct the pedals and lead to an accident.

  • Keep your attention on driving. Operating controls such as the audio or heating system can become a distraction if they draw your focus away from the road. The driver remains responsible for maintaining safe control of the vehicle at all times.
