Kia Picanto: Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist malfunction and limitations / Limitations of Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist

Kia Picanto 2024-2026 Owner's Manual / Driver assistance guide / Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA): (if equipped) / Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist malfunction and limitations / Limitations of Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist

Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist may not detect vehicles reliably or may respond unexpectedly in some situations. Be especially alert in the following conditions:

  • During severe weather, including heavy snow or heavy rain.

  • When snow, rain, dirt or other material covers a detecting sensor.

  • When the area around a detecting sensor becomes unusually hot or cold.

  • When a nearby vehicle, pillar, wall or other object blocks a sensor while you are driving.

  • When driving on a highway or motorway ramp, or through a tollgate.

  • When the road surface or surrounding ground contains unusual amounts of metal, for example near subway construction.

  • When fixed objects are close to the Kia Picanto, including sound barriers, guardrails, central dividers, entry barriers, streetlights, signs, tunnels or walls. Double structures may also affect detection.

  • When travelling along a narrow road bordered by overgrown trees or grass.

  • When driving through a wide-open area with few vehicles or structures, such as a desert, meadow or suburb.

  • On wet surfaces, including roads with puddles.

  • When another vehicle follows very closely behind the Kia Picanto or passes close beside it.

  • When another vehicle is travelling so fast that it passes the Kia Picanto in a short time.

  • When the Kia Picanto passes another vehicle.

  • While the Kia Picanto is changing lanes.

  • When the Kia Picanto and a vehicle in the adjacent lane start moving at the same time and accelerate.

  • When a vehicle in the adjacent lane moves two lanes away, or when a vehicle two lanes away moves into the adjacent lane.

  • When a trailer, carrier or similar attachment is fitted near a rear corner radar.

  • When a bumper sticker, bicycle rack or other object covers the bumper area around a rear corner radar.

  • When the bumper around a rear corner radar has been struck or damaged, or the radar has moved out of position.

  • When the vehicle’s height is unusually low or high because of a heavy load, incorrect tyre pressure or a similar condition.

  • When the system encounters certain types of road users or vehicles, including:

    • A motorcycle or bicycle.

    • A vehicle such as a flat trailer.

    • A large vehicle such as a bus or truck.

    • A moving obstacle such as a pedestrian, animal, shopping cart or pushchair.

    • A low-profile vehicle such as a sports car.

Stay alert to the road and surrounding traffic. Braking assistance may not operate in the following conditions:

  • The Kia Picanto shakes severely while travelling over a bumpy or uneven road, or over a concrete repair patch.

  • The road is slippery because of snow, standing water, ice or similar conditions.

  • A tyre is underinflated or damaged.

  • The braking system has been modified.

  • The driver makes an urgent steering manoeuvre.

WARNING

  • Driving on a curved road

On a curve, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist may not detect a vehicle travelling in the adjacent lane. Stay alert and check the road and surrounding traffic yourself.

On a curve, the system may instead detect a vehicle in the same lane. Continue to monitor the Kia Picanto’s position and the vehicles around it.

  • Driving on an inclined road

  • Driving where the road merges or divides

Illustration of blind-spot detection limitations where the road merges or divides

On a slope, the system may not detect a vehicle in the adjacent lane, or it may mistake the road surface or a roadside structure for a vehicle. Pay close attention to the road and surrounding traffic.

Where lanes merge or divide, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist may not detect a vehicle travelling in the adjacent lane. Check the surrounding area directly as you drive.

  • Driving where adjacent lanes are at different heights

Stay alert to the road and surrounding traffic. When lanes are at different heights, such as at an underpass junction or a grade-separated intersection, the system may not detect a vehicle on the other road.

WARNING

  • Switch off Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist when towing a trailer or another vehicle.

  • Strong electromagnetic waves may interfere with Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist and affect its operation.

  • The system may be unavailable for approximately three seconds after the Kia Picanto is started, while the front view camera or rear corner radars initialize.
