Operating door locks from outside the vehicle

Mechanical key

Kia Picanto mechanical key used to operate the exterior door lock
  • Insert the mechanical key into the door lock and turn it towards the rear of the vehicle to lock. Turn it towards the front of the vehicle to unlock.

  • Operating the door lock with the key locks or unlocks the doors accordingly. Use the direction of key rotation to select the required action.

  • After unlocking, pull the exterior door handle to open the door and enter your Kia Picanto.

  • To close a door, push it shut by hand and check that it has latched securely. Make sure all doors are fully closed before leaving the vehicle or setting off.

Transmitter/Smart key

  • Use the transmitter or smart key to lock and unlock the doors remotely. Select the appropriate button for the action you want to perform.

  • With the smart key in your possession, you can also lock or unlock the doors by pressing the button on the exterior door handle.

  • After unlocking the doors, pull the exterior door handle to open the door and enter your Kia Picanto.

  • Close each door by pushing it shut by hand, then check that it is fully closed and securely latched.

NOTE

  • In cold, wet weather, freezing conditions can affect the door locks and operating mechanisms. A frozen mechanism may not respond normally when you attempt to lock, unlock or open a door.

  • Repeatedly locking and unlocking the doors in quick succession with the vehicle key or door lock switch may temporarily interrupt system operation. This protective response helps safeguard the electrical circuit and prevent damage to the locking system’s components.

WARNING

  • A door that has not been securely latched may open again. Always check that the door is fully closed rather than relying on its appearance alone.

  • Before closing a door, make sure everyone’s hands and body are clear of the opening. Take particular care around passengers entering or leaving the vehicle.

WARNING

Remaining inside a vehicle for an extended period during very hot or very cold weather can cause serious injury or endanger life. Do not lock your Kia Picanto from outside while people remain inside, as they must be able to leave the vehicle when necessary.

CAUTION

Avoid repeatedly opening and closing the doors unnecessarily. Do not apply excessive force to a door while its closing mechanism is operating, as this can place unnecessary strain on the mechanism.

Operating door locks from inside the vehicle

With the door lock button

  • To unlock a door, pull the door lock button (1) into the Unlock position. The red mark becomes visible, indicating the unlocked position.

  • To lock a door, push the door lock button (1) into the Lock position. When the button is correctly positioned, its red mark is no longer visible.

  • To open an unlocked door, pull the interior door handle (2) outwards.

  • If the interior handle of the driver’s door or front passenger’s door is pulled while its lock button is in the locked position, the button moves to unlock and the door opens.

  • An open front door cannot be locked while the ignition key is in the ignition switch or the smart key is inside the vehicle. This restriction applies when the front door is open and the key remains in the stated location.

WARNING

Door lock malfunction

If a power door lock fails while you are inside the vehicle, try one or more of the following methods to find an exit. Use another available door or opening if the affected door will not release:

  • Repeatedly operate both the electronic and manual unlocking controls while pulling the door handle at the same time.

  • Try the locks and handles on the other front and rear doors to determine whether another door can be opened.

  • Lower a front window and use the key to operate the door lock from outside the vehicle.

  • Move into the luggage compartment and attempt to open the tailgate as an alternative exit.

WARNING

Never pull the interior handle of the driver’s or passenger’s door while the vehicle is moving. Pulling the handle can release the lock and open the door, creating a serious risk to occupants.

With central door lock/unlock button

Kia Picanto central door locking controls with unlock button (1) and lock button (2)

The central door lock switch lets you operate the vehicle’s door locks together. Press the locking or unlocking button according to the action required.

  • Press the door lock button (2) to lock all vehicle doors.

  • Press the door unlock button (1) to unlock all vehicle doors.

  • If the ignition key is in the ignition switch, or the smart key is inside the vehicle, the doors will not lock while any door remains open. Pressing the central lock button (2) under these conditions will not lock the doors.

WARNING

Doors

  • Keep all doors fully closed and locked whenever the vehicle is moving to help prevent accidental opening. Locked doors also discourage unauthorised entry when your Kia Picanto slows down or stops.

  • Before opening a door, check for approaching vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians. Make sure the door’s opening path is clear, as opening it into someone’s path can cause a collision, damage or injury.

WARNING

Unlocked vehicles

Leaving the vehicle unlocked increases the risk of theft and allows someone to enter or hide inside while you are away, potentially putting you at risk when you return. Whenever you leave the vehicle unattended, remove the ignition key or take the smart key with you, apply the parking brake, close every window and lock all doors.

WARNING

Unattended children, elderly occupants or pets

A closed vehicle can become dangerously hot, exposing children, elderly occupants and pets who cannot escape to severe injury, heatstroke or death. Never leave anyone who cannot leave independently unattended inside. If you become trapped in a hot vehicle, seek help immediately; while awaiting assistance, stay hydrated where possible and reduce exposure to direct sunlight through the windscreen. Children left alone may also operate vehicle controls and injure themselves, or face harm from someone entering the vehicle. Never leave children or animals unattended in your Kia Picanto.
