Airbag warning and indicator light

Airbag warning light

Operating conditions

  • When your Kia Picanto is started, the air bag warning light should illuminate for approximately 3–6 seconds and then go out. This brief initial illumination is the expected warning-light sequence.

Malfunction

  • The air bag warning light does not illuminate briefly when the vehicle is started. The absence of the expected initial illumination indicates a possible system malfunction.

  • The air bag warning light remains illuminated after the initial period of approximately 3–6 seconds, instead of going out as expected.

  • The air bag warning light comes on while the vehicle is moving. Illumination during driving is a malfunction indication rather than part of the normal initial warning-light sequence.

Passenger's front air bag ON/OFF switch: (if equipped)

Simple operation

  1. Insert the master key into the front passenger’s air bag ON/OFF switch.

  2. Turn the key to the appropriate position to activate or deactivate the front passenger’s air bag. Check the corresponding indicator to confirm the selected status.

    • Deactivate the front passenger’s air bag when a child restraint is installed on the front passenger seat. Follow all child restraint and air bag precautions provided in this manual.

Operation

  1. Place the master key in the front passenger’s air bag ON/OFF switch so that the air bag status can be selected.

  2. Turn the key to activate or deactivate the front passenger’s air bag as appropriate. The deactivation situations described here include:

    • When a child restraint is installed on the front passenger seat, subject to the installation requirements and safety precautions in this manual.

    • When the front passenger seat is unoccupied.

Front passenger air bag ON/OFF indicator

Operating conditions

  • After the vehicle is started:

    • The front passenger air bag ON/OFF indicator illuminates for approximately 4 seconds as part of its initial indication.

  • When the front passenger’s air bag switch is set to ON or OFF:

    • The corresponding front passenger air bag ON/OFF indicator illuminates to show the selected status.

Non-operating conditions

  • During the approximately 3-minute period after the vehicle is switched off, while the air bag system can still operate:

    • The front passenger air bag ON/OFF indicator is not displayed. The absence of an indication during this period does not mean that the air bag system is immediately inactive.

CAUTION

  • If the front passenger’s air bag ON/OFF switch malfunctions, the air bag warning light illuminates on the instrument panel. The passenger air bag OFF indicator (Front passenger air bag OFF indicator symbol) will not illuminate, and the passenger air bag ON indicator will come on instead. The SRS Control Module reactivates the front passenger’s air bag, which can then inflate in a frontal-impact crash even though the switch is set to OFF (Front passenger air bag switch OFF position symbol). Have the system inspected by a professional workshop. Kia recommends visiting an authorised Kia dealer/service partner.

NOTE

  • With the front passenger’s air bag ON/OFF switch set to ON, the passenger air bag is activated. Do not install an infant seat or Child Restraint System on the front passenger seat while this air bag is active.

  • With the front passenger’s air bag ON/OFF switch set to OFF, the passenger air bag is deactivated, provided the system is functioning correctly.

Operating conditions

  • When the vehicle is switched to the ON position, the SRS air bag warning light illuminates for approximately 6 seconds and then goes out. This is the expected initial warning-light sequence.

  • The warning light does not illuminate briefly when the vehicle is switched ON.

  • The warning light remains illuminated after the initial period of approximately 6 seconds instead of going out.

  • The warning light comes on while the vehicle is moving.
